High-fired Blue Underglaze Earrings with Liquid Gold Detailing

A single drop strikes still water — and circles ripple outward, one after another.

Gentle Wave captures that moment in porcelain. Over a dozen small discs, each painted in deep cobalt blue underglaze and edged with liquid gold, are layered into a ring that echoes the rhythm of water spreading from a single point of contact. The stud above mirrors the same blue and gold — a quiet beginning to a quiet cascade.

The blue you see is underglaze — cobalt pigment hand-painted onto white porcelain, sealed beneath a transparent glaze, and fired at 1260°C. The color lives under the glaze, not on it, and will never fade. The liquid gold detailing is applied by hand over the fired glaze and baked at low temperature (700–850°C) to bond with the surface — Jingdezhen's traditional overglaze gilding technique, unchanged for centuries. Both belong to a thousand-year tradition — the same city that once produced imperial porcelain for emperors.

No two firings yield the same shade. No two pieces carry the gold the same way. Yours is the only one exactly like that in the world.

Technique Heritage

  • Blue Underglaze  — Underglaze painting is one of Jingdezhen's most revered techniques, dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (13th century). Cobalt pigment is hand-painted directly onto the porcelain body before glazing. A transparent glaze is then applied over the painted surface, and the piece is fired at 1260°C. The result: color sealed beneath a glass-like glaze layer — vivid, permanent, and impossible to scratch off. This is the same technique behind the world-famous Blue & White porcelain that has defined Chinese ceramics for centuries.
  • Liquid Gold Detailing  — An overglaze technique: liquid gold is hand-painted onto the already-fired glaze surface and baked at 700–850°C in a decorating kiln. During baking, the organic resin in the gold liquid burns away, leaving a thin metallic film (approximately 0.1μm) bonded to the glaze. This is the same finishing technique found on Meissen, Hermès tableware, and Royal Copenhagen — a shared heritage between Eastern and Western porcelain traditions at the highest level.
