Description

Double-Sided Underglaze Earrings with Liquid Gold Detailing

A diamond window opening onto a garden at dusk — blues bleeding into green, a brush of rose, a wash of cream.

Diamond Flower is built around a single rhombus, its interior a miniature canvas of hand-painted underglaze. On both sides. Cobalt blue, leaf green, soft pink, and warm cream flow into one another like watercolor on rice paper — because that is exactly how they were painted, one brushstroke at a time onto porcelain that has not yet been glazed. A transparent glaze seals the painting beneath glass, fired at 1260°C. The color will never shift, never fade, never wash away. The fine gold line tracing the diamond's edge is liquid gold, hand-applied over the fired glaze and baked at low temperature — the same centuries-old overglaze gilding tradition that finishes the finest porcelain in Jingdezhen and Europe alike.

Turn it over. The painting continues — a different composition, the same hand. Two faces, one piece. No front, no back. Only whichever side the light catches first.

Key Features

  • Double-sided underglaze painting — Each side carries a unique hand-painted composition; cobalt, green, pink, and cream blend like watercolor on porcelain
  • Rhombus silhouette — Clean geometric form inspired by traditional Chinese lattice window patterns, with delicate openwork
  • Color sealed under glaze at 1260°C — Underglaze pigments locked beneath transparent glaze; permanent, scratch-resistant, fade-proof
  • Liquid gold detailing — Hand-applied liquid gold edge, low-temperature baked (700–850°C); traditional overglaze gilding technique
  • One of a kind — Each firing yields a different color flow; no two pieces share the same pattern

Technique Heritage

  • Underglaze Painting (釉下彩) — Mineral pigments are hand-painted directly onto the unglazed porcelain body. A transparent glaze is then applied over the painted surface, and the piece is fired at 1260°C. The painting is sealed beneath a glass-like glaze layer — vivid, permanent, and impossible to scratch off. This is the foundation of Jingdezhen's ceramic tradition since the Yuan Dynasty (13th century), the same technique behind the world-famous Blue & White porcelain.
  • Double-Sided Painting — Painting both faces of a single piece requires the artisan to compose two independent artworks that must coexist on one form. Each side is painted separately before glazing, with no overlap — a test of brush control and spatial imagination that elevates a small earring into a two-sided canvas.
  • Liquid Gold Detailing  — An overglaze technique: liquid gold is hand-painted onto the already-fired glaze surface and baked at 700–850°C. During baking, the organic resin in the gold liquid burns away, leaving a thin metallic film bonded to the glaze — the same finishing technique found on Meissen, Hermès tableware, and Royal Copenhagen.
