Hand-Sculpted White Ceramic Taihu Stone Drop Earrings

In the Song dynasty, white ceramic was not understood as the absence of color, but as purity achieved through mastery. The celebrated white wares of the period were valued for glaze so refined and luminous that the surface seemed to glow from within.

Taihu White filters that tradition through the form of the scholar’s rock. Each earring is hand-sculpted from ceramic clay into the organic, perforated silhouette of a taihu stone—the form that has anchored Chinese gardens for more than a thousand years. Pure white high-temperature glaze is fired to a smooth, glass-like finish, catching light on every ridge and casting shadow into every hollow.

There is no gold and no colored accent. The design trusts the form entirely. White glaze does not decorate the stone; it reveals it, allowing light and shadow to articulate every opening, wrinkle, and subtle variation left by the hand. Each earring hangs from a silver-tone French hook, moving with the wearer as light passes through the perforations from changing angles.

Key Features

  • Hand-sculpted taihu stone silhouette — An organic, perforated ceramic form inspired by Lake Tai scholar rocks and their four traditional virtues
  • Pure white high-temperature glaze — Smooth, glass-like white glaze that amplifies the three-dimensional form through light and shadow
  • Form without ornament — No gold tracing or colored accents; the white ceramic and sculpted surface carry the design
  • Silver-tone French hooks — Cool-toned fishhook ear wires selected to complement the white ceramic
  • Moving negative space — The drop format allows the perforations to shift against skin and hair as the earrings move

Technique Heritage

  • The Song dynasty pursuit of white — Achieving true white required refining the clay body to remove iron impurities and developing a transparent or white glaze that enhanced rather than obscured it. Song white wares became an expression of maximum effect through minimum means: beauty located in glaze quality and form rather than painted ornament.
  • Sculpting absence — A natural taihu stone is shaped by centuries of water erosion. In ceramic, the artisan must anticipate each opening and build the form around it. The walls between perforations must be strong enough to survive firing yet delicate enough to feel naturally eroded. Because every piece is sculpted by hand, no two earrings are identical.
  • High-temperature white glaze — At temperatures typically above 1200°C, silica, feldspar, and whiting melt into a homogeneous glass layer that bonds with the ceramic body. White glaze reveals every surface variation, so a clean result depends on careful clay preparation, controlled glaze thickness, and precise firing.

Care

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth; for stubborn marks, use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately
  • Avoid prolonged contact with hair dye, dark cosmetics, or other strongly colored substances; clean promptly if contact occurs
  • Polish the silver-tone hooks occasionally with a jewelry cloth and keep the hooks separated during storage
  • Store each earring separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box to prevent tangling or chipping
  • Handle the perforated ceramic form with care; avoid dropping it or pressing it against hard surfaces
  • Avoid extreme thermal shock
